Trapped Tourists Saved From Big Freeze
Ayrshire Post
Loch Doon -- Mar 17, 2006 --

Three tourists were saved by quick thinking heroes after a daring late night rescue,

The group of Irish fishermen were stranded after Ayrshire was hit by six inches of snow during an icy Arctic blast at the weekend,

The men were trapped in the Loch Doon area following six inches of snowfall on Saturday evening and had come ill-prepared for the wintry weather,

They rejected the help of an RAF helicopter which went to the scene on Sunday afternoon before Alan Finlay, owner of the Outdoor Survival Training Centre in Patna, launched his own rescue mission later that night,

Alan said "For whatever reason, these guys decided they could do it alone and didn't need the help of the helicopter, "Their decision didn't sit well in my mind so myself and a few others from the group returned to the are to check if these men were as OK as they said, "As it turned out, they were completely unprepared for the conditions as they hadn't checked the weather forecast and were wearing trainers and light clothing,

"We offered them a hot meal and a mug of coffee and were able to persuade them it was best to try and leave the area with us,"

But while these men had a lucky escape, Alan warned others planning a similar trip to take the right precautions,

He said, "Its important that if people are going off the beaten track, they must let someone else know their plans and whereabouts, Arrange to phone in at a certain time so that your progress can be tracked and be sure to make contact with an agreed person at various intervals,"

Alan went on: "It seems like overkill but it's better to be safe than sorry, as the situation with these Irish fishermen certainly proved,"
